Rank Math vs AIOSEO vs Yoast: Which WordPress SEO Plugin Should You Use?

April 30, 2025 | WordPress SEO

Updated October 3, 2026

Compare Rank Math vs AIOSEO vs Yoast, and you will find all three handle the SEO basics well: page titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps and structured data. Rank Math gives you the most in its free version, including redirects. Yoast pairs detailed writing feedback with one Premium plan that bundles local, video and news SEO, and AIOSEO offers a guided setup with paid plans priced by how many sites you run.

The right choice depends on three things: what you need without paying, how many sites you manage, and whether you run an online store. Prices below are at the time of writing (October 2026), in US dollars, before tax.

What do Rank Math, AIOSEO and Yoast have in common?

All three cover the technical SEO a small business site needs, with no code. Each one gives you:

  • Title and meta description fields with a preview of how the page may look in search results
  • Automatic XML sitemaps (a list of your pages for search engines)
  • Schema markup, the structured data that tells search engines what a page is about
  • An on-page check that scores how well a post uses its focus keyword as you write
  • Import tools for moving over from another SEO plugin

They are also all widely used. WordPress.org lists Yoast on more than 10 million active sites, Rank Math on more than 4 million and AIOSEO on more than 2 million. Use one SEO plugin at a time: two running together can print duplicate titles and schema on every page.

How do the three plugins compare?

The biggest differences are in what the free versions include and how the paid plans are priced.

Rank Math vs AIOSEO: which is better?

If you want the most without paying, Rank Math is ahead. Its free version includes a redirect manager, a 404 monitor (a log of addresses visitors tried that do not exist), up to five focus keywords per post and a choice of 18 schema types. AIOSEO keeps all of those behind a paid plan.

On paid plans the gap narrows, but the pricing works differently. Rank Math PRO costs $95.88 for the first year and $107.88 after that, and it covers every site you own. AIOSEO Basic costs $49.50 for the first year and $99 after that for one site, and AIOSEO renewals run at roughly double the first-year price on every plan. Compare renewal prices, not introductory ones.

AIOSEO has strengths of its own. Its setup wizard walks you through the essentials, while Rank Math has many modules and settings (you switch on only the ones you need). Every paid AIOSEO plan also includes AI credits, while Rank Math sells its AI tools as a separate subscription.

  • Choose Rank Math if you want redirects and several keywords for free, or you run more than one site of your own.
  • Choose AIOSEO if you prefer a guided setup, want AI writing credits bundled with your plan, or only need one site covered.

Yoast vs AIOSEO: which should you choose?

Both free versions work the same way on the basics: one focus keyword per post and no redirect manager. The difference is mostly in the paid plans.

Yoast SEO Premium is $118.80 a year for one site. That includes up to five keyphrases per post, a redirect manager that prompts you when you move or delete a page, internal linking suggestions, AI tools for drafting titles and meta descriptions, 24/7 support, and the Yoast Local SEO, Video SEO and News SEO plugins.

AIOSEO Basic ($49.50 first year, then $99) covers one site with WooCommerce SEO, core redirects, per-post schema and up to ten keywords per post. Local SEO starts on the Plus plan ($99.50 first year, then $199, for three sites).

Yoast's free version leans on writing guidance. Its red, orange and green checks cover readability and inclusive language as well as keywords, which helps if you write your own posts and want plain feedback.

  • Choose Yoast if you want writing guidance, or Local SEO, redirects and extra keyphrases in one plan for one site.
  • Choose AIOSEO if you want redirects and extra keywords at the lowest first-year cost, or you manage a few sites and want them on one plan.

Can Yoast optimize for multiple keywords?

Only in Premium. The free version of Yoast checks one focus keyphrase per post, and Yoast SEO Premium checks up to five, counting synonyms and different word forms.

For comparison, Rank Math's free version allows up to five focus keywords per post (unlimited in PRO), and AIOSEO allows one for free and up to ten on its paid plans.

Extra keyphrases are for close variants of one topic, such as "emergency plumber" and "24 hour plumber". They are not a way to make one page rank for unrelated searches. If two keywords need different answers, they usually need different pages.

Which SEO plugin handles redirects for free?

Rank Math is the only one of the three with a redirect manager in its free version. Yoast includes redirects in Premium. AIOSEO added core redirects to its Basic plan in December 2025, with redirect logs, 404 tracking and full-site redirects on Pro and above.

A redirect sends visitors and search engines from an old address to a new one. Use a permanent (301) redirect when you:

  • Delete a page or post that has a better replacement
  • Change a page's URL
  • Merge several posts into one
  • Move to a new domain, or from HTTP to HTTPS

Without a redirect, anyone following an old link or bookmark lands on a "page not found" error, and links other sites gave the old page stop pointing anywhere useful. Send each old URL to the closest matching page rather than the homepage, and avoid chains where one redirect leads to another.

If your SEO plugin has no redirect tool, the free Redirection plugin does the job. Keep all your redirects in one tool so they are easy to find later.

Which plugins include AI tools?

All three now offer AI tools for drafting titles and meta descriptions, but they sell them differently. Yoast includes its AI tools in Premium with no separate credits to buy. AIOSEO includes AI credits in every paid plan, and free users can buy credits as they go. Rank Math sells its AI tools as a separate subscription, Rank Math AI, and its paid SEO plans come with a 15-day trial.

Yoast and Rank Math also sell tracking of how AI assistants mention your brand: Yoast SEO AI+ ($358.80 a year) and Rank Math AI, which follows ChatGPT and Gemini. Treat any AI draft as a first draft and check it says something true about your business before you publish.

Does your SEO plugin affect your Google rankings?

Only indirectly. The plugin makes your pages easy for search engines to read, but what ranks them is useful content, a fast and secure site, and links from other sites. A few habits matter more than which plugin you choose:

  • Clean URLs. In Settings, Permalinks, choose "Post name" so addresses are short and readable.
  • HTTPS everywhere. Browsers warn visitors about pages without it.
  • A fast site. Compress images, use caching and remove plugins you no longer use. WP Resolve's Speed Optimization is a one-off Core Web Vitals pass with before-and-after numbers.
  • Answers to real questions. Write about what your customers actually ask, one main topic per page, with the keyword used naturally rather than repeated.
  • Internal links. Link related pages to each other so readers and search engines can find them.
  • Google Search Console. It is free and shows which searches bring up your pages. Revisit older posts it shows slipping and update what is out of date.

Can you switch SEO plugins later?

Yes. Rank Math imports from Yoast, AIOSEO and SEOPress, AIOSEO imports from Yoast, Rank Math and SEOPress, and Yoast has its own import tools. Back up the site first, run the import, deactivate the old plugin, then spot-check titles, descriptions, the sitemap and your redirects on your most important pages.

Whichever plugin you pick, it only helps while it stays updated and works alongside the rest of your plugins. If you would rather hand that off, WP Resolve's care plans include weekly plugin updates with visual checks and daily off-site backups, month to month. Not sure where your site stands? Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast?

Rank Math includes more in its free version, such as redirects and up to five focus keywords per post. Yoast puts more weight on writing guidance, and its Premium plan includes local, video and news SEO. Neither one ranks a site on its own.

Is AIOSEO free?

Yes. AIOSEO Lite is free on WordPress.org with no time limit, while redirects, per-post schema, extra keywords and local SEO need a paid plan.

Can I run Yoast and Rank Math at the same time?

No. Two SEO plugins can output duplicate titles, descriptions and schema, so import your settings into the one you keep and deactivate the other.

How many keywords can I add in Yoast?

One focus keyphrase in the free version, and up to five in Yoast SEO Premium.

Will switching SEO plugins hurt my rankings?

It should not, as long as your titles, descriptions and redirects come across and your URLs stay the same. Back up first and spot-check your key pages after the import.

Do I need the paid version of an SEO plugin?

Many small sites do well on a free version. Upgrade when you need something it lacks, such as redirects in Yoast or AIOSEO, local SEO for several locations, or store-specific product schema.
